Tyson hot in the cold
söndag, 02 augusti 2009 10:30

tyson_2009_dngalan.jpgTyson Gay braved the cold and easily won the 100 metres after a blistering finish, but did not get the Stadium record at the 43rd DN Galan at Stockholm Olympic Stadium, Friday July 31, 2009.

Gay was assisted by a tailwind of 2,6 metres per second, but his 9.79 proved that DN Galan was the test he needed before the World Championships in Berlin.

-I like Stockholm Olympic Stadium and this is what I wanted to prove to myself, said a satisfied Tyson.

Darvis Patton, USA, was second with 9.95 followed by Jamaica’s Asafa Powell, (9.98), who can find comfort in the fact that he still owns the Stadium record, (9.86).

In spite of the cool weather, 19 degrees, Allyson Felix, USA, bettered the Stadium record in the women’s 200 metres to 21.88. Allyson received a 1-carat diamond with a smile that warmed the 12 034 spectators.

Men’s pole vault has become a strong Swedish event at DN Galan. Jesper Fritz, Malmö AI shared the victory with Ukrainian Maksym Mazuryk and beat among others this years’ world leader Steven Hooker, Australia.

Mustafa Mohamed came straight from training at high altitude in St. Moritz and in true fashion ran aggressively in the 3000 metre steeplechase. “Musse” was in the lead, but with 300 metres to go he fell on a barrier, but fought his way to the finish and came in seventh in 8:27.17 – exactly ten seconds behind winner Mike Kipyego.

Stefan Holm won five times at DN Galan, but this night he did not have to jump in order to receive an ovation. Holm who entered the Stadium on a train, (Skansentåget), was informed that during his career he had jumped 1 021 metres and 86 centimeters, (based on the winning height from all competitions). The spectators thanked Stefan by clapping, stamping and roaring.

Hockey player Peter Forsberg delivered the diamonds and opened DN Galan with a javelin throw. “Foppa” threw 30.54 with a special equipment – a hockey stick with a javelin point – and can add the title DN Galan “klubbmästare” to his two Olympic gold medals and two Stanley Cups!

Big Shot – world class serious fun
måndag, 27 juli 2009 11:21

-I hope there will be a big crowd, because we are really going to make it a great show and a thrilling competition.

Says Adam Nelson, the American world champion, (2005), Olympic silver medalist, (2004) and title defender in DN Galan Big Shot that will take place in Kungsträdgården, in the centre of Stockholm,Thursday, July 30.

Rajne Söderberg, meeting director for DN Galan likes the idea of having the shot put competition outside Stockholm Olympic Stadium.

-Some events are difficult to follow in the Stadium because there are so many things going on at the same time. By having shot put in Kungsträdgården the event gets a totally different focus. The athletes are in the spotlight and the spectators can, free of charge, see the world’s best shot putters and even try for themselves. The competition is sanctioned by IAAF and the shot putters are taking the competition seriously.

Adam won Big Shot last year with 20.75, but he knows he is up against a strong field.

-Not all meets have shot put, so we are very happy that DN Galan for the second year has invited some of the world’s best male and female shot putters. And to compete with the spectators so close makes it even more attractive, says Adam.

Defending world champion Reese Hoffa, USA, is pumped up for his Big Shot debut.

-Adam told me how much fun Big Shot was, so I didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation, says Reese. The fact that we both like to clown about does not mean that we do not take the competition seriously. We have to do that because the field is very strong.

How about Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski, Poland and Dylan Armstrong, Canada who was fourth in Beijing 2008?

Women’s shot put looks like it will be a great fight between Germany’s Nadine Kleinert, who was silver medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games and her compatriot Denise Hinrichs, second at the World Junior Championships 2006. But do not count out Cleopatra Borel-Brown, Trinidad and this years’ American champion Michelle Carter.

What can Sweden’s Helena Engman do?

Schedule for Big Shot, Thursday, July 30
Youth Shot: 12.00-15.15
Spectators can try shot put: 15.15-16-15
Big Shot 16.15 women, 18.00 men

Olympic champion dreams of a diamond
tisdag, 21 juli 2009 13:53

Steven Hooker won pole vault gold at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Now he wants a diamond.

-I believe if the conditions are good Rodion Gataullin´s 20 year old Stadium record, (5.95) is achieveable. The London super grand prix in 2008 was my last competition before the Olympics. I jumped 5.97. Let´s hope that history repeats itself and I can do that again and win myself a diamond.

The red haired Australian will go against great jumpers at Stockholm Olympic Stadium, Friday July 31.

-In addition to Steven, his compatriot Paul Burgess and Toby Stevenson have cleared six metres, so our field is very strong, says meeting director Rajne Söderberg.

Steven jumped 6.06 indoors in February and has 5.95 outdoors so far.

-The last two months have been good. I have been healthy and my injuries are under control. I feel like I am working my way into good form and have DN Galan in mind for a big performance as it is my last competition prior to the World Championships in Berlin.

The top ranked jumper loves competing in Stockholm.

-DN Galan 2005 was my first big result at a major European competition. I also had a good competition indoors earlier this year, so I feel like Stockholm is a place where I always jump well.

Hooker will face five jumpers with personal bests of 5.80 or higher. Among these is Toby Stevenson who with a helmet on his head won Olympic silver in 2004.

Alhaji Jeng won in 2005, the last time DN Galan had men´s pole vault. He beat Nick Hysong and Steven Hooker who also cleared 5.65. Jeng jumped a seasonal best of 5.61 in Heusden on July 18.

On the same day Jesper Fritz went over 5.55 in Zarazoga. Maybe Jesper is ready to better his two year old personal best 5.70?
